Little brown bat
Little Brown Bat, sometimes called Little Brown Myotis, is scientifically named Myotis lucifugus. Myotis refers to the genus bat of the “bat ear”. They are one of the most common bats found in North America. The top is covered with a glossy brown smooth fir and the lower fir light patch. Typically it is about 3 to 3½ inches long and weighs only 1 ounce to 1/8 to ½ ounce. Needless to say, their name says it all because they are certainly small! However, though small, the average wingspan is more than twice the length of the body, and on average it is 6-8 inches wide, which is surprising. But even more interesting is that they can live up to more than 30 years, specifically an average of 20-30 years.
Little brown bat is a micro bat. That is, it is nocturnal and generally small and retains the predatory diet of mainly insects and other insects. They can consume 50% of the insect's weight! And during pregnancy or breastfeeding, they eat even more. The breeding season is generally around September and October, but females actually store male sperm for spring fertilization and make bats born in summer. The gestation period is usually 50-60 days and sexually matures 6-8 months after birth. Women generally give birth to only one bat pup per year, but sometimes give birth to two bat pups.
They use a sonar system called echolocation to see surrounding objects and structures and look for prey. They communicate with each other through a complex series of chirps, beeps, and trebles. Most of them cannot be detected by the human ear.
