Facts about Pet Pigs - Benefits of Early Socialization 1

The Saturday morning routine was suddenly interrupted when I received a call from a new owner of a micromini pig. She bought a pig from another breeder, so when she apologized over the phone, I was able to hear notes of despair in her voice. “Debra” was surfing the web trying to find a solution to the problem she had with her new pet pig, so she thought she would meet and call my web site.

After listening to her for a few minutes, Debra impressed me as someone I was very eager for a pet pig but was a little confused by the behavior that her pig was showing. She and her husband moved enough distance to pick up a 4 month old micromini pig, which turned out to be bigger than the breeder had made her believe. This should have been her first red flag. The next cause of concern was that pigs were living outside pens among other pigs. The breeder said the pig was socialized.

Debra and her husband were almost determined to refrain from buying pigs, but she would have been very disappointed to go home empty-handed because he thought he was cute.

Since then, she has found that the pig has not been socialized and his diet consisted of dog food. I breathed when I heard that a person who professed to be a breeder of micromini pigs actually gave dog food. As a result, his age pig was not only overweight, but also malnourished!

Debra tried to contact the breeder over and over without any reaction and had problems with the pig. Not being socialized, not receiving insignificant training, not being well maintained, and not being castrated has caused a lot of frustration.

The problem was how to make the outer pig the inner pet.

My first suggestion to Debra was to castrate him as soon as possible, and because she did not have her own vet, she advised her to schedule an appointment with my vet.

That is a matter of trust.

• Owners must gain pig confidence in the following ways:

Patience, and much of it-praise him when he did something right. Be patient with him and give him a lot of love.

• Established routines-Set a specific time to eat, take to the bathroom, play, train and go to bed.

• Close interaction with humans-Debra should speak calmly with the pig, help him adapt to the indoor environment, and give him more time.

Meet the pig at their level-the pig is not made to look up, so she sits on the floor and offers him a small apple, some cheerios, or raisins, she Say "come" that should make it easier to meet.

Since Debra loves her pig and wants to keep him, she is willing to do anything within her powers to bring him.

The situation is annoying, but you need to remember that it is not the pig's fault. In fact, working with Debra and her pig reminded me of an interesting study that shows how pigs living in a rich environment are kept clean and live.

• More optimistic
• More reliable
• And good results are expected

According to a study conducted by Dr. Katherine Davis of the Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Rural Development at the University of Newcastle, “With almost no exception, rich pigs are optimistic about what this new noise means. "I approached in the hope of getting a treat," she said.

“In contrast, a pig in a boring environment is pessimistic about this new strange noise and fears it may be a somewhat uncomfortable plastic bag, and has not approached the treat run.” Davis Dr. explains further,
“It's a response that is always seen in humans, where human senses influence the judgment of vague events.”

Dr. Davis & # 39; study shows exactly why socializing pigs is so important that they will spend a lifetime with a human family. As Debra discovered, it is much easier and fun to interact with pet pigs who are optimistic about the prospects and expect good things to happen. It certainly makes a difference for pet mini pig owners who love their pigs and want the best for them.
