In all litigation matters, the court requires that certain documents be filed with the court. This includes documents submitted to initiate a lawsuit, all claims, petitions, pleadings, and regulations. Until recently, filing was done directly through mail or filing services.
It is becoming more common for courts to require electronic filing of documents. In federal court, this is already mandatory for lawyers.
