Why Are We So Fascinated By Stories About Bad Times? 1

The story about catastrophes and the end of society is hardly new. In fact, many books and movies about terrible disasters and repressive societies have become classics. These story topics range from zombie apocalypse to the aftermath of a devastating war. They may explain how to respond to repressive societies and terrible natural disasters. This is that. Most of us keep trying to expect a really good day. So are you still attracted to the story of what is happening?

These stories are usually but not always included in the major genres of science fiction. This may be because these stories usually explain future events or alternative reality that can be imagined. But SF doesn't seem to be the right category for all of these stories.

There are probably three common types of stories about bad times.

  • Dystopian novels usually describe situations in which society has become oppressive. The most famous dystopian novel is probably the brave new world by Aldas Huxley.
  • Apocalyptic novels portray horrific events such as the end of a devastating war and zombie attacks. In fact, they gained popularity after the Second World War when people began to imagine the world after the nuclear war. Bombs have been replaced by zombies in many fictions, but they are still popular today. Novels such as The Postman and World War Z are popular examples.
  • Usually, more disaster stories are included. They place a small number of people in situations where they have to deal with some man-made or natural disaster. Poseidon Adventure is a popular example. The first was a novel written by Paul Garico. It became a movie, which was recreated several years ago.

You will probably need to worry about many real-world problems today. Why do we want to have free time reading about social collapse, destructive wars, monster attacks, or natural disasters? Why did the author spend time creating such a story?

In my opinion, most of the dystopian classics are still popular because the authors used this format to discuss the problems they are actually facing today. The author may have just exaggerated the current situation, or may have noticed the trend and concluded. You may or may not agree with the author's ideas, but there are some things you should always think about.

The apocalyptic story is different. I'm trying to imagine a world that is less crowded and that can function more independently. We don't want to leave the comfort of the house to fight zombies or find food. However, in order to get out and become a pioneer, you may almost appeal to the feeling of escaping some of the less comfortable aspects of everyday life.

What is the attraction of disaster flicks? None of us want a cruise ship to be turned into a huge wave. You might get the same thrill from these stories, just like a horrible horror movie. You might get an adrenaline shot and a chance to imagine yourself as a hero.
