There is no doubt that we as Americans use a lot of non-renewable resources. We use electricity made by burning fossil fuels, which are mainly coal. Fly with jets that burn aviation fuel, refined fuel from petroleum We drive a gasoline engine, a car that runs on gasoline refined from petroleum. We purchase items that are transported across the sea and land by burning more and more fuel. Many of the items you purchase are made of petroleum by-products such as plastics, lubricants, and clothing.

As a nation, we need to reduce the amount of these non-renewable resources we use. We are harming the environment by mining the coal we use, drilling the oil needed to maintain the addiction, and simply transporting these products. Every time an open-pit mining company cuts down the mountains and increases coal, it harms the environment. Whenever an oil rig fails, millions of barrels of oil are dumped to the ocean and coast. Every time a tanker spills cargo into our sea. It's our problem, not their problem.

If we act as individuals and take some simple steps to reduce consumption, we can move in the right direction as a nation and consume less non-renewable resources.

1. You can use less gasoline. You can reduce the number of driving. You can use a car with better fuel efficiency. We can pool cars, ride bicycles and go out to work. You can commute. We can better plan our trips, which increases efficiency when doing business.
2. Less power can be used. You can turn off the light when not in use. You can switch to a more energy efficient bulb. You can adjust the thermostat to consume less power. Set it higher by 1 to 2 degrees. If everyone does this all over the country, the total savings will be astronomical. Washing machines and dishwashers are not very useful. Combine the loads. Take fewer or shorter hot showers. The list has endless ways to use less power.
3. More renewable energy sources can be used. Sources such as wind, solar, hydro, and wood can all be used for home lighting, cooling, cleaning, and heating. Companies that we purchase electricity can claim to make some, most or all of their energy from renewable fuel sources. You can request the investigation and construction of a wind farm. You can ask them to provide you with green energy options.
4. You can become self-sufficient by installing wind turbines or solar panels to convert your home to wind or sunlight. These conversions can be costly in the coming years, based on the amount of electricity that does not need to be purchased after the conversion is installed. Many of the conversion processes can be done using do-it-yourself methods, saving money.
