How to Convert LP Records With USB Turntable - All About the Preamp 1

There are basically two types of turntables, amplified and non-amplified.

Some turntables are stand-alone devices, not complete entertainment systems. These types often have no preamp.

What is a preamplifier? First a little background.

In order to store music that plays for a long time on an LP record, you usually record the record by reducing the low range and boosting the high range. This is called a RIAA curve. To capture audio from vinyl, you must make sure that this curve is corrected. USB turntables [that is, specially created to digitize vinyl] handle everything. Some audio input devices designed for computers without sound input ports also correct this.

Another problem with preamps is to return these frequencies to normal levels when playing a record. You can readjust the frequency by changing the equalizer settings in the audio software.

The third problem with turntables is low frequency hum. If you hear this while trying to preview the record, you hear the ground because the turntable where the preamp amplifies the sound is not grounded. To fix this, wrap the turntable ground wire around the protrusion on the bottom of the 3-pole plug, such as that on the power strip, and plug it into a grounded outlet.

None of this is a problem when purchasing a USB turntable, especially when using a turntable built to digitize vinyl or a stereo receiver. How do I check if there is a stereo receiver on the turntable? If an AM-FM radio or cassette deck is built into the unit, it is guaranteed that a receiver is also built in.

You can avoid these hassles by purchasing a turntable made specifically for converting vinyl to MP3 format. The Sony PS-LX300USB USB stereo turntable system offers a built-in phono preamplifier, static balance tone arm, and fully automatic operation. The Ion Audio TTUSB 10 Vinyl Recording USB turntable provides switchable phono / line level RCA output [with built-in preamp] and adjustable anti-skate control to improve stereo balance.
