Award-winning children's writer Donna M. McDyne wrote a book for children between the ages of 8 and 12. This book teaches about American history during the turbulent period of slavery. The Golden Pathway is a beautiful example of what can be done when children's literature is presented in an interesting and artistic way.
The Golden Pathway's illustrations are particularly exciting and will definitely encourage the desire to know more about this rivet time of visual thinking, conversation and history. McDyne tells beautifully about the subway and the boy who overcame the past of abuse to help the slaves flee freely.
The courage shown by David and the slave Jenkins helps to empower all youth, especially young people who have to deal with bullying at school and abuse at home every day. Children understand David's suffering when they hold their hands over their ears to cover the screams that shattered the silence of the night.
Screams continue as a result of David's father using his belt to submit the slaves. One night, David ignores the time he is alive to overcome the fear of what his father will do to him and help the person escape the bondage of slaves for a new life I swear.
As a slave child white child, David puts himself in terrible danger by helping Jenkins escape from the hostile environment and escape freely through the subway support network.
In the author's note at the end of The Golden Pathway, McDine explains to the reader how various codewords were used to help slaves reach free. For example, "conductor" was used to describe individuals who helped slaves reach freely by giving shelter along the way.
