Microsoft Access 2013 is software that has evolved over the years from Access 1.1 in 1992 to the present.
With Office Professional 2013 software [including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Access], you can install and run Access 2013 as usual.
The Office 365 version is paid with a monthly subscription and provides Web services to Office 2013. Includes OfficeProfessional 2013 software and Access 365 and Access 2013.
Apart from the name “Access”, Access 365 has little in common with Access 2013 or earlier versions of Access.
What is Access 365?
Access 365 is a tool for creating web apps that run within SharePoint 2013. The old .ACCDB format has been deprecated. New applications must use the Access 365 model or be compliant with Access 2010.
With Access 365, you can quickly create small applications in a simplified web development environment using standard web technologies such as HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript. One major feature is that Access Services can now store data in a Microsoft SQL Server or SQL Azure database.
Using SQL Server overcomes the 2 gigabyte size limit of previous Access databases. SQL Server also provides all the security and functionality essential to strategic corporate business systems.
How about Access 2013?
The Access 2013 desktop version has changed little from previous versions-it continues to support front-end and back-end database models and Visual Basic for Applications [VBA].
However, Access 2013 no longer supports:
- Microsoft Access project [ADP]
- Access 97.mdb database format
- PivotChart and PivotTable
- dBASE database
- Smart tag [action tag]
- Access the 2003 toolbar and menu
- Microsoft SQL Server Database Upsizing Wizard
- Developer source code management
Office apps
There is a new feature of Access 365-Office app. This technology allows Office to be used as a service on the cloud or the web. Web pages can be hosted in an Office application [Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, or Project].
Apps are usually published to the Office store for use.
JavaScript API for Office
Access 365 has a new JavaScript API that provides programmatic access to Microsoft Office documents. The API includes application-specific data types, objects, functions, and events.
The JavaScript API is a significant improvement over the rough JavaScript design functionality in HTML.
SharePoint app
Access 365 provides an easy way for SharePoint to host the app's front end and have SQL Server data management on the web. This simplifies web development.
Note that Visual Basic for Applications [VBA] code is not compatible with SharePoint Access applications.
Access 365 Macro Editor
Templates can be used to create apps with a sleek look. No code is required. However, business rules and data manipulation can be implemented in a new macro language. Macros do not have VBA functionality, but are suitable for simple logic.
Microsoft's strategic direction
Microsoft Access was not for corporate databases. Many companies have evolved Access database software into a core management system. However, limitations such as network traffic, peak load, reliability, rollback recovery, and security can ultimately cause these systems to fail.
The current direction of Access 365 reverts to the original intent of Microsoft Access. In short, it provides a rapid development environment for small line-of-business [LOB] applications.
Microsoft Access using VBA is at the end of the road. For mission-critical management systems, the best development platform is Visual Basic.Net with SQL Server.
