If you have participated in an Indian wedding, you may notice a beautiful tattoo on the bride's hand. These complex and often floral motifs are part of Indian culture symbolizing joy, good luck, health and positive vibes, and are widely known in Western countries as “temporary tattoos” or “henna”. The henna paste used is from natural Hausonia shrubs. Crush twigs and leaves to make a fine powder and mix it with water to make a paste. Today, mehndi designs are not exclusively for weddings and festivals.
Mehndi design type
Mehndi motifs and designs depend on the cultural background of the person. The oldest form of mehndi is a mugley design unlike any other type because all single curl patterns and dots are highlighted in bold. Every design is done with great care and introduces the pattern in a unique way.
For example, Indian designs can be easily identified by complex patterns such as flowers, curls, peacock shaped curves, and large dots in the middle of the palm. Human fingertips are also usually covered with henna designs. Popular designs include curling vines, teardrop shapes, and paisley patterns.
Another type of mehndi is an Arabic design that is distinguished using floral arabesques in a geometric pattern. Designs are usually preferred because they often depict nature, such as leaves and flowers, and are not filled, and dries faster than other design types.
The Moroccan design resembles an Arabic pattern but is essentially geometric. Moroccan style also differs in that the design often has a symbolic meaning and is used as protection against evil. Last but not least is the design of Pakistan. This type combines Indian and Arabic designs and is often worn by brides and children during special festivals.
Choose a design
As the popularity of henna tattoos increased, many became interested in mehndi designs. However, unlike westernized designs, mehndi designs are different, and depending on the comfort zone, the design can cover the entire arm as well as the hands. Some designs are also used to cover the feet, ankles, and other body parts. The design also has a symbolic meaning, but other designs are used only for decorative purposes. You can also add decorations such as modern symbols, gems and pearls to further refine your design.
