Have you ever wondered what will come after a turkey? Or what is Brooklyn? And where is the bunk coming? If you are confused about all bowling terms and want to know what you are talking about at the bowling alley, don't worry anymore. The following is a list of tenpin bowling terms you will often hear.
Backup ball -For right-handed bowlers, the backup ball is a ball that turns from left to right instead of right to left. The opposite is true for left-handed bowlers.
6 bags A -6 bagger is struck six times in a row. The word bagger can be preceded by any number between 3 and 11. This is one of the more frequently used bowling terms.
Bed post [or goal post] Used to explain -7-10 splits. It is very difficult to convert to a spare.
Big Four -Split that keeps the bowling pins 4-6-7-10 upright. Again, it is famous for its difficult conversion.
Brooklyn -When a bowler hits a pocket that is opposite to what a right-handed or left-handed player expects, for example, a right-handed bowler hits a normal bowling ball that hits the left pocket [1 & 2 pins] instead of the 1 & 3 pins
conversion -Bowling term describing spares. For example, 7-10 conversion.
count -Number of knocked-out pins added to the previous frame strike or spare.
double -A bowling term that strikes twice in a row.
Field goal -Miss throws two pins set far apart.
Hambone [clover, packed in 4 bags] -Words used for 4 consecutive strikes.
Head pin -First pin.
Heavy shot -Shots that hit too many pins on the front and split them.
hook -When you catch a bowling ball, the ball moves straight and bends toward the pin as you approach the pin.
Light shot -Light shots hit a bowling pin closer to 3 pins than 1 pin of a right-handed bowler. The same is true for pins 1 and 2 of left-handed bowlers.
loft -Release bowling balls that are too high on the lane.
pocket -Ideal area of impact for recording strikes. This is between pins 1-3 for right-handed bowlers and pins 1-2 for left-handed.
spare -Where all pins are knocked down in 2 attempts.
strike -Where all pins are knocked over on the first try.
Strikeout -When the bowler is attacked three times in a row in the last frame.
