Teaching About Copyright in the Classroom 1

Fact 1-The “fair use” portion of US copyright law almost always allows students to use copyrighted material such as songs, photos, and other media unless the finished product is duplicated And distribution.

Fact 2-doing the same thing in real life [outside the classroom] is illegal, and violations of copyright law are punishable by fines and / or prison sentences.

Because of the latter, teachers are always encouraged to provide students with tools and information to complete projects using free public domain alternatives. For example, suppose you assign a student to create a PowerPoint presentation on a specific topic. In the assignment, the presentation must include at least one graphic for each slide related to this topic. Shows how to find legitimate content in the first presentation, rather than allowing students to “steal” images from other sites on the web. These photos and other content are easy to find. For example, just search for “public domain photos” and “royalty-free photos” on Google. One of my favorites is Stock XChange, but there are many others.

Another excellent alternative owned by some schools is a site license subscription for clip art services. For a flat fee, schools and local institutions can purchase annual subscriptions for various sites. This gives you free and legal access to thousands of copyright-protected photos that can be used without restriction in most types of presentations. The Clipart.com site offers this type of service.

Some sites can openly use images in selected publications, while other sites limit what they can use and how they can be duplicated. Always check your site's usage policy or copyright policy before using images or other content in your presentation. Encouraging students to follow these rules will help instill a clear sense of right and wrong about this very “gray” issue.
