Type 2 Diabetes - What Are Those Cravings All About? 1

Craving is caused by the biological properties of the food itself. In other words, some foods have a chemical composition that makes them eager much like drugs, alcohol, and tobacco that have addictive ingredients. However, only some foods can help with craving, and these foods are attractive to most people, not just people with type 2 diabetes.

Many people with type 2 diabetes are anxious for sugar and chocolate ... now these cause biochemical effects similar to addictive drugs. They are certainly not as powerful or dangerous as drugs, but addiction chemistry seems to work here!

1. Sugar Not only does it taste sweet, it also has a very gentle effect. It affects your brain in a manner similar to the drug drugs morphine and heroin. Sugar does not contain opium, and its taste causes the release of opium in the brain, releasing another chemical dopamine that is key to the brain's pleasure center. Therefore, the effect of sugar on the brain relieves and boosts pain and discomfort.

There is no need to craving sugar itself. You can crave fresh white bread or bagels, crackers, potatoes ... high GI foods that turn into sugar very quickly. Usually do not crave low GI foods.

2. Chocolate Contains the stimulants caffeine, theobromine, phenylethylamine, and sugar. Therefore, the appeal of chocolate is not only sweetness. Unfortunately, chocolate also contains a significant amount of fat.

These alternatives will help you taste:

If you want sugar:

  • In the recipe: maple syrup, molasses, skanuts will help. These are certainly not healthy foods, but the idea is to replace the refined sugar with a smaller amount of syrup or juice.
  • Stevia is an herbal sweetener and is available at health food stores
If you long for chocolate:

  • Powered cocoa is defatted chocolate and can be used in cooking and beverage
  • If you like chocolate ice cream, try a low-fat frozen ice cream alternative

The general rules for these two cravings containing sugar are:

  • The more refined sugar you eat, the more you craving
  • The easiest way to avoid longing is to avoid eating sweets and refined sugar, including white flour, potatoes, etc. The best idea is not to buy them or keep them at home

Many people with type 2 diabetes are aware that simply adding protein to their diet often reduces their desire for sugar.
