Espresso is a type of coffee that contains golden cream foam [Crema] as a topping. Using a dedicated espresso machine, the coffee is extracted at high pressure using very hot water and is usually served immediately.
Brewing espresso
In general, a single shot [about 7-10 grams] or double shot of finely ground coffee is compressed with a force of about 150 N, resulting in a dense coffee pack. Pressurized water [approx. 7-9 bar, barometric pressure 1 bar] with a temperature of about 90 ° C is pushed into the coffee pack. This process takes approximately 18-27 seconds. The timing when coffee starts to flow from the machine begins.
Espresso machine
Since the present invention, various machine designs have been born. Commercially, automatic espresso machines have replaced steam-driven, piston-driven, or pump-driven machines. There are usually three types of automated machines.
Semi-automatic: The pump is turned on / off manually to send hot water.
Automatic: A flow meter is added. The pump turns off automatically when a pre-set amount of water passes through the flow meter.
Super-automatic: grinding, tamping and extraction are all done on the machine. Simply put the coffee beans in the bean hopper and the rest is done with the push of a button.
Espresso variations
There are many variations of espresso and most cafes offer the following espresso:
Espresso-coffee extraction
Macchiato-Espresso with foamed milk
Affogato-espresso with ice cream
Latte-espresso with silk milk
Cafe cappuccino-espresso with bubble milk
Cafe mocha-espresso with chocolate and silk milk
Flat white-half espresso and half milk
Long black-long extraction of espresso
Next time, I will go for a coffee at the cafe. It will be interesting to try different types of espresso. Ask your barista for more information about espresso. This will make the coffee tasting more fun!
